A dead battery in your John Deere Gator could be a signal that it's time to buy a new battery. But before you spend money on a replacement, it's a good idea to recharge the old battery. Maybe the loss of charge simply means your Gator has been sitting unused for too many months, or maybe an electrical short is draining the battery. Either way, you'll need to recharge the old battery in order to diagnose the problem.

1.Raise the passenger seat on your John Deere Gator. Push back the rubber boot that covers the positive battery terminal. Clean both battery terminals with a wire brush if they are corroded.
2.Connect the black (negative) clamp from the battery charger to the negative (-) terminal on the battery. Connect the red (positive) clamp from the battery charger to the positive (+) terminal on the battery.
3.Make sure all settings on the battery charger are set for normal 12 volt operation. Plug the battery charger into an electrical outlet and charge for the proper amount of time, according to the charger instructions. (If it is a "smart" charger, a light will indicate when the charging is complete.)
4.Unplug the battery charger from the electrical outlet. Remove both battery charger clamps from the battery terminals, taking care not to short them against any exposed metal on the Gator.
5.Replace the rubber boot on the positive terminal of the battery. Lower the seat and test the battery by starting the engine.

Tips & Warnings

*Corroded battery terminals can be cleaned by dripping a solution of 1/2 tbsp. baking soda to 1 pt. water on the terminals, soaking for 10 minutes, then wiping clean with a rag.
*The battery terminals will resist corrosion better if they are coated with silicone oil or battery terminal grease.
*John Deere recommends not removing the battery caps or adding fluid to the battery, or the battery warranty will be voided.
