Dec. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- PROJECT INFORMATION:
Reseda Lake was once a place that was stocked by the CA Department of Fish and Game; channel catfish during the spring and summer, and rainbow trout during the winter.  However, due to the poor water quality, these activities have been suspended for quite some time.  The water is so dirty that it often results in fish kills, as well as many other environmental concerns.

With the help of a state funded grant, specifically with funds for urban lakes and environmental enhancement projects, the city of Los Angeles has committed to improving water quality and habitat at the lake.

Floating Islands West, a west coast manufacturer and distribution center for BioHaven Floating Islands®, has constructed over 5,000 square feet of Floating Treatment Wetlands for Reseda Lake.  BioHaven Floating Islands are created from Recycled material and are designed to mimic mother nature’s own floating wetlands in an expanded form.  Over 100 island modules will be used to create 7 large islands.  By creating a “concentrated wetland effect,” the 5,000 square feet will be equivalent to the benefits of over 30 acres of constructed wetlands!

This effort will include volunteers from Reseda High School along with local residents.   All participants, as well as attendees, will have the opportunity to see first hand the importance of conservation and sustainability with the use of a BioHaven Floating Island®.  We hope to be able to create a healthy lake for the public’s use and enjoyment for many years to come.

The islands will be planted with a selection of plant species that will accomplish a few main goals.  These plants are aimed at enhancing the island's ability for nutrient uptake, providing both nesting and feeding habitat for song birds and other wildlife, and the selected species are intended to bloom from spring through fall.  They should create a great visual for park visitors to enjoy year round!
