PRLog -- I purchased this 54 inch G25 model plasma on sale to replace an old Sony Grand Wega LCD that broke down after 3 years. This is my first plasma TV and it has its advantages and disadvantages over LCD. Out of the box they TV has a great picture. The certified THX mode for movies and blurays is absolutely breathtaking. I like to use the CUSTOM picture mode for watching regular TV as THX mode is too dark for that. Like most other sets, the VIVID and STANDARD modes are useless. There is also a GAME mode, but i don't use it. I game with the THX mode. There is a slight buzz to the unit as is the case with most plasma's, but its coming from the back of the set and i cannot really hear it standing 2 feet away so its a non issue. I have a bar fridge in the same room which pops on and off during the day, its ten times louder then this panel. Sports in HD on this panel is incredible, much better then LCD. There is zero motion blur and when watching faster sports like hockey and auto racing, this was a huge issue on my LCD sets. The picture in blu-ray and HD is stellar, simply the best image quality i have ever seen and i have owned a lot of panels. The SD is decent, but not as good as my old 720P Sony set. For SD, it took a lot of playing around with the picture settings in Custom mode to get it so i am happy. The deep black levels on this set are incredible and something you will never see on an LCD. Now that i have seen the effect to the picture deep blacks deliver, i can't imagine living without it. The sound isn't great, but that's typical of any panel. If you hook your TV through a receiver then this is a non issue. The new anti-glare screen on this years models is the best i've ever seen on a plasma. My G25 is hung up on the wall with 4 large windows in the room. I close only the blind directly in front of it during the day and glare is not an issue. I looked at buying a Samsung LED set, but couldn't justify paying 800 - 1000 dollars more for a technology that has its own flaws/issues. There is zero input lag on video games on the g25 which is something that has become an issue on some LCD / LED sets. The only minor disadvantage is the image retention these sets sometimes suffer in the beginning. Image retention should not be confused with burn-in. Its never permanent and goes away 10 or 15 minutes after you start watching TV. The permanent burn in issues that affected plasmas 5 years ago are a thing of the past with Panasonic plasma's. As the Panasonic plasma gets older, the phosphers age and make it less and less likely you will see retention down the road. Samsung plasmas are no where near as good as Panasonics for this issue and will burn in. I have seen it. With regards to image retention, there are websites unaffiliated with either brand name that prove Panasonic's are the best at handling retention. There is a built in pixel orbiter and white wash options that will get rid of any retention you may encounter. The front bezel is a bit plain looking compared to some of the LCD sets. The front logo doesn't light up and there is no eye candy glass on the edge for aesthetics like some other models have. It has a simple piano black finish, but trust me on this one. It looks really sharp up on the wall, sometimes simple is better.
Finally, I have come to realize through tons of research that there is no perfect TV. They all have their own characteristics and/or flaws . It comes down to what you can live with and what you cannot for whichever brand name or technology you choose. If you research online any technology or model from any manufacturer there will be somebody complaining about some issue on the panel. So you have to take some of the issues with a grain of salt as most non-videophile people would never see them to begin with.
I can honestly say that for the money, you will not find a better picture then whats on this set at this price point. The value is totally there with the G25.
