Sleep apnea symptoms in children are often neglected by parents. Not their fault. Some symptoms are common and normal traits of a growing child.

By default, children are naturally active when stimulated by play. It is even more heightened when they have others to play with. However, if they are too hyperactive, they can be showing signs of behavioral disorder. It could also be a sign of sleep apnea.

On the contrary, there are children with this disorder who are not hyperactive. Instead, they are always tired and sleepy. They often fall asleep while reading their books (not just because they find it boring). They have a hard time concentrating. This is also a factor for them not to do well in school.

Around 3-12% of children snore at night and this is normal. So how do you tell the difference if it's sleep apnea or just a regular snore? A type of this disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is most common among children. The foremost indicator of OSA is snoring and having pauses in breathing while asleep. When a child has this disorder, he or she is sleep deprived because of these pauses, snorts or gasps for air. When a child lacks good quality sleep, it results to poor performance in school, sudden behavioral changes and short attention span. If your child is overweight, the circumference of the neck area would be bigger. A larger neck usually means that there are extra fatty tissues that can block the air passage while asleep. Any form of blockage or obstruction in the airway can cause snoring and pauses in breathing. Large tonsils and adenoids are common causes of obstruction. Take note however that being overweight is not always an indicator. Some children who have OSA are underweight and have trouble gaining weight. Observe also if your child tends to breathe through the mouth while sleeping.

Children who are a little older can experience bedwetting, night terrors and developmental problems. They are also prone to upper respiratory infections and perspire excessively while asleep.

If you find that your child displays almost all of these symptoms, then it may be time to visit the doctor for proper diagnosis.
