Three Good News Pet Hero Stories

USA Today Pet Talk columnist Sharon Peters asked Pet Smart Charities to gather stories of adopted animals that had become heroes in their families or neighborhood.  Over two hundred stories were e-mailed.  Here are three heartwarming stories of rescued pets who had been abandoned and then found a way to give back the priceless gift of life to their rescuers.

Digger Points the Way

The 10 month old puppy began whining around 3 am.  It was bitter cold and snowy night and very unusual behavior for Digger.  Upon being let out back, Digger just stood still and stared at a spot in the back fence without barking; did not respond to a call to come back in. Turning to get in from the quiet cold, Digger’s master heard a weak, “Help me,” coming from the other side of the fence.  After 911 was called, they discovered an elderly neighbor clothed only in her nightgown by the fence.  Apparently, she had gotten confused, wandered outside, slipped in the snow, and could not get back up.  Digger has been inducted into the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association Hall of Fame.  He will be honored as a 2010 hero by county police.

Peaches Licked Away

Jeremy Noss of Holt, Michigan didn’t realize he was having a stroke as he lay down and started to fall asleep on the couch.  Peaches must have known something wasn’t right because she kept licking and licking his face to keep him alert.  Finally with his face dripping in Peaches’ sweet nectar, he got up and realized he could barely walk or talk.  He was then able to get the life saving medical help he needed.

Inky Yowled Anyway He Could

Numb, partially paralyzed and lying in a pool of blood at the bottom of the basement stairs where he had fallen shortly after midnight as a support beam at the top of the stairs gave way, Glen Kruger mustered enough energy to say to his cat, “Inky get Brenda.”  Inky bolted down the hall and slammed his body repeatedly into the bedroom door yowling all the way until the man’s wife awoke and followed Inky to the scene of the accident.  Glen was rushed to the ER with a broken neck, dislocated shoulder, and broken arm.  If it weren’t for Inky, he would have gone into shock and died shortly thereafter.
