By: Insomnia Expert For some reason we find it funny to make jokes about people who snore loudly, or make other strange noises in their sleep. While some of these jokes and sight gags might indeed be funny, sleep apnea itself is not. Many people who snore loudly and make the other noises are, more than likely, suffering from a sleep disorder known as sleep apnea. Rather than being funny, this is a potentially serious medical problem. Sleep apnea symptoms include: * Trouble concentrating * Constant fatigue * Depression * Hypertension * Poor memory * mood swings, irritability * Frequent night time urination * Sleepiness during the day Briefly, there are three types, or classes, of sleep apnea. These are "OSA" where the soft tissues of the throat and airway collapse momentarily and "obstruct" the airway. "CSA" which describes an imbalance in the part of the brain that controls respiration and simply doesn't instruct the body to breath for a period of time. "Mixed/complex" Medical studies have proven that, if left undiagnosed and untreated over times, this sleep disorder can have fatal consequences. Because of the disruption in normal sleep patterns, the neurological balances required to function effectively are disturbed. These imbalances and lack of restful sleep can easily lead to accidents in the workplace and while driving. Men are two to three times more likely to have sleep apnea symptoms than are women or children but the disease is normal in all groups. In men, symptoms increase with increased age and with weight gain. Symptoms are much the same in all groups as well. If you observe any of these symptoms in yourself, or a loved one, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible. Diagnosing sleep apnea accurately will, most likely require an overnight sleep study that is conducted in a medical setting. In the study sensors will be attached in various locations to measure brain activity and movement of the chest and abdomen. Treatments may be surgical or non-surgical depending on the findings of the sleep study. Surgical treatments may include nasal airway surgery, or other options. Non surgical options will include using a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) and medication.
