As many young men in the sixties era, Tom Daniels, was at the age to enlist in the military, but was not supportive of the Vietnam War. He did everything he could to avoid the war. He began taking college classes, but eventually, because of the hassles of fighting against the draft, decided to just volunteer to be drafted.  Once in the Army, he still tried everything he could to avoid going to combat.

Get Out Of The Way, as the book is appropriately titled, is not about staying out of the way of bombs or bullets on the war front, but instead, trying to stay out of the way of the combat and the war front itself.  Author, Daniel Dinges, has done a wonderful job in portraying another side of the war, a side that many do not want to talk about, but was a problem in Vietnam, and is still a problem today.

While the main character was not against war, as he came from a family of soldiers, he was against the politics surrounding the war.  This view is very translatable in today’s times.  Many American families and soldiers are against the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq, and fight against joining the military.  This book is very relevant in our society and is a good read for those who love military books, books of struggle, or even books of inspiration.  The book is also fun and entertaining, and not just a war time tale.

Hats off to Mr. Dinges, this was an enjoyable read!
