Dec. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- According to the report ‘The Pharmaceutical Market: Morocco’ available at http://www.piribo.com/publications/country_reports/pharmaceutical_market_morocco.html the pharmaceutical sector has entered a new phase of development with the adoption of new pharmaceutical legislation, which provides a modern legal framework for the pharmaceutical sector. The new legislation aims to address some of the structural weaknesses inherent in the previous system and to open up the pharmaceutical sector to foreign investment by abolishing the requirement that pharmaceutical companies be majority-owned by a pharmacist. A patent law has also been ratified which, although not meeting all the demands of the international pharmaceutical industry, does provide a much clearer legal framework regarding intellectual property rights.

Although the Moroccan pharmaceutical market is small in global terms, per capita spending on pharmaceutical products is comparatively high for an African country, where average per capita income is just above US$3,000. The pharmaceutical market, which was stagnating prior to the launch of the universal health insurance scheme in 2006, is expected to grow by a moderate CAGR between 2010 and 2015. Around 2,600 drugs are eligible for reimbursement under the national health insurance scheme. Reimbursement is made on the basis of the retail price of generic products where these exist. The government aims to cut drug prices and encourage generics consumption in 2010, following a Parliamentary report published in November 2009.

The pharmaceutical market is highly concentrated, with a handful of companies meeting the bulk of demand. Morocco has a well-developed pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, led by Cooper Pharma. The company aims to open a plant for the production of oncologicals in 2011. In terms of product licences, Cooper Pharma signed its latest licence with a Taiwanese company in September 2010. In recent years, however, the local industry has lost ground in the face of increasing competition from imported products, the bulk of which are supplied by France. sanofi-aventis is by far the largest pharmaceutical operation in Morocco, both in terms of production and total sales. Other foreign companies with high sales in the country include GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer.
