Dec. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- The total market for LED's in 2010 is estimated to be approximately 75 billion LED's. The number of LED's forecasted to be manufactured in 2011 is in the range of 115 to 125 billion.

It is important to remember that the majority of these LED's are used in back lighting application for LCD TV's.

The market for lighting LED's for general purpose lighting is estimated to be in the 10-12 billion unit range. However, this is a total different kind of LED than the ones used in back lighting of TV's.

The TV LED's operate at low power, use a small chip, and are priced at about 10-11 cents in volume.

The lighting class LED's can be driven with over lamp, use a chip size 6-10 times the size of a TV back lighting LED, and range in price from $1 to over $3 depending on color temperature, brightness, and matching specifications.

As the article states LED's being used to replace other technologies is growing rapidly, but mass adoption will not come unless legislated by governments, or the price of the LED light bulb is reduced significantly.
