Years ago, if you couldn't sleep, you'd see your doctor and get some sleeping pills. But nowadays people are becoming much more aware of the drawbacks and dangers of taking this type of medication - it only treats the symptoms and not the cause, you can get addicted to it and, in the long run it becomes less and less effective. So people are turning to the gentler methods of treatment - such as acupuncture, homeopathy and hypnosis, and methods which use natural, nutritional supplements and dietary changes to promote good sleep.

Not everything that we eat and drink is good for us and the nutritional approach advises cutting down on caffeine intake (which includes tea, chocolate and soft drinks as well as coffee) and alcohol. We tend to think that alcohol will help us sleep but, in fact, it suppresses the deep phases of the cycle so that, even if we sleep through the night, we will feel less rested and refreshed in the morning than after a normal night.

One of the ways in which the body induces sleep is to produce certain chemicals. The two best known are serotonin and melatonin.

SEROTONIN

A diet which is rich in complex carbohydrates - fruit, rice, bread, potatoes and cereals - will help promote the production of serotonin. So the Atkins diet and other low carbohydrate diets may interfere with this and, if you have a tendency to insomnia, may make it worse. Milk contains a substance which the body converts to serotonin, which is why a warm milky drink has been a bedtime favourite for many years. However, simple carbohydrates, such as sugar, raise the blood sugar levels rapidly, giving a burst of energy. So although they're great if you're running a marathon, they're not helpful close to bedtime.

MELATONIN

Melatonin is available as an over the counter supplement but its effectiveness in the treatment of insomnia is uncertain. However, there is no doubt that a deficiency of melatonin can cause wakefulness. Recently it has been discovered that the blue component of light has a role to play in this. At dawn the light has a lot of blue in it... and we wake up. At sunset the light tends to have more pink... and we start to feel sleepy. Unfortunately electric light bulbs and television screens emit a lot of blue light. But it is possible nowadays to buy low-blue light bulbs and, if you really can't do without TV in the evenings, you can even get spectacles which will filter out the blue component.

In addition to serotonin and melatonin, vitamins play an important role in promoting sleep. The B vitamins help to alleviate stress and anxiety and B3 is essential in the production of serotonin. Another of the B vitamins, inositol, enhances that part of sleep in which we dream. Although B vitamins are found in cereals and seeds, a high dose vitamin and mineral supplement taken on a regular basis will promote good health as well as ensuring that the body's sleep-promoting chemicals are produced in adequate amounts.
