Houston Rockets Center Yao Ming will have surgery to fix the stress fracture in his left ankle, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.

Jan. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Houston Rockets Center Yao Ming will have surgery to fix the stress fracture in his left ankle, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to AP because the procedure had not been officially announced by the team. Yao’s surgery was first reported by KRIV-TV.

Yao missed all of the 2009-10 season and most of this season with the injury, which was sustained during the 2009 playoffs against the Los Angeles Lakers. His contract expires at the end of this season.

The team managed to go 42-40 last season with Yao, the top overall draft pick in 2002. Yao injury problems developed in the 2005-06 season. Since then, the center missed 91 games over four seasons before his injury against Los Angeles.
