Follow on Google News | Bring home the title at this year's Tree-AthlonEnvironmental charity Trees for Cities is urging people to take part in the 2011 Tree-Athlon and help regain a world record as registration for the event opens this week.
By: Trees for Cities Six weeks later, however, the Barefoot Runners of India Foundation recruited 306 barefoot people to break the record, only 28 more recruits than the record set in Battersea Park. So this September, Trees for Cities aims to bring the title back to London at the seventh annual Tree-Athlon. The Tree-Athlon is a three part event, made up of a 5km run, a world record attempt for largest barefoot race, which anyone can join on a 100m grass track, and the opportunity to take your own sapling home to plant. The aim is to raise funds for the planting and care of thousands of trees across the UK and internationally. Registering before 14 February for the event will earn you a 15% discount on the entry price. Any friends and family who come to support you at the event can take part in the record attempt - an easy run on springy grass. Ben Fogle returns to join the Tree-Athletes this year. The presenter, writer and adventurer said: “Trees for Cities does vital work improving our streets and green spaces, making cities healthier, happier places to be. Supporting that work by taking part in the Tree-Athlon and the barefoot world record attempt last year was a great experience, and I urge everyone to get their registration form filled out soon so you can come and help us smash the record again!” Sharon Johnson, Chief Executive of Trees for Cities, said: “Last year’s Tree-Athlon was a great day and the money our Tree-Athletes raised enables us to continue our important work. We are reintroducing fruit and nut trees to schools through our edible playground project, beautifying our streets with large majestic trees, and at the start of this year we planted a new 10,000-tree urban woodland in just one week. “Climate change is a major challenge for our generation. Through taking part in events like the Tree-Athlon, people can make a difference.” Register now: Email tree-athlon@ # # # An independent charity which plants trees and landscapes public spaces in urban areas, to impact on global warming and beautify the urban landscape, encouraging greater social cohesion through the active participation of local people.
