Jan. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- It is easy to believe that over the last decade, supply chain risk is greater than it has ever been.  Everyone at some point has fallen victim to the volatile economy and is feeling more vulnerable than ever to the uncertainty of their supply chains.  As an organization with extensive experience in helping companies improve overall Supply Chain Management, we continue to witness organizations utilizing the same supply chain management practices that they have been using for the past five, ten years.

Customers have evolved; organizations are adding more products and suppliers; new product mixes have affected replenishment strategies causing significant change in the structure of an organization’s supply chain.  At its most basic level, the best practices you followed just five years ago, no longer match the way business is performed today.

Taking the First Step to Improving Your Supply Chain

Step 1:   Admit that you have a problem.
-   Are your end-to-end processes within each Line of Business poorly understood?
-   Do individual or group heroics make your processes work?
-   Are you suffering from poor demand forecasting / supply matching?
-   Having difficulty executing the transition to new product lines?
-   Is manual intervention constantly required?
-   Are you finding it difficult to track goods through the Supply Chain?
-   Are communications incomplete or disjointed?
-   Are activity sequences performed differently?
-   Do your processes change 3 - 8 times a year?
-   Is excessive time spent in different applications/systems?

If you can answer yes to any of the questions above, you could be suffering from “Supply Chain Pains”.

Step 2:   Seek help to pinpoint the problems and areas for improvement.

In order to make great strides in improving your supply chain, you must first understand your processes.  At Emergys, we know Supply Chain.  For over a decade, Emergys has worked with many customers, across multiple industries and can help to visualize and identify problems within your supply chain and business processes.

Step 3: Set an achievable course to recovery.

Now that you have exposed the areas for improvement and are ready to make the necessary changes, you must now implement a strategy that will improve supply chain performance, provide a better understanding of your processes – ultimately delivering bottom-line business value.

In a past report, it was stated that companies engaged in process standardization are able to manage complex value chains and are 73% more profitable than organizations that do not use standard processes?

We have found that most of the benefits of effective supply chain management can be achieved by implementing process improvements.
