HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus. It is the virus that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS. CDC estimates that about 56,000 people in the United States contracted HIV in 2006. (http://www.cdc.gov)

•   Two million people died from AIDS in 2007 (5,500 people per day), and 72 percent of these deaths were in sub-Saharan Africa.
•   Over 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, and 67 percent of these infected people live in sub-Saharan Africa.
•   Fifty percent of adults living with HIV/AIDS are women.
•   There are 7,400 new infections every day (95 percent in developing countries).
•    HIV/AIDS is a "disease of young people" with 45 percent of the new infections each year occurring among people ages 15 to 24. (http://www.until.org/statistics.shtml)

SPECIAL GUEST: WNBA star Candace Wiggins. Team: Minnesota Lynx. She was born in Baltimore, Md. She is the daughter of Angela Wiggins and the late Alan Wiggins.  Candace’s father played seven seasons with the San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles (MLB). In 2008, she founded the Candice Wiggins Foundation, an organization aimed at reaching out to youth about the AIDS/HIV epidemic. Candace also supports other AIDS/HIV awareness organizations, including Until There's A Cure and the Minnesota Aids Project. She graduated from Stanford in June 2008 with a degree in Communications. Candace was California's Ms. Basketball in 2004. She was First-Team All-America selection by Parade Magazine and Student Sports, and McDonald's All-American in 2004. Candace guided La Jolla Country Day to two state championships (2001, 2002). She has been featured in Glamour Magazine, Seventeen Magazine. Greek People and USA Today.
