FROM THE CHAPTER UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF:

This by far was the absolute hardest chapter that I wrote.  It takes a very big person to understand their faults and try and figure out how to correct them when you have been the way you have been for so many years.  To find out how to get started on this long journey, it’s essential to take an honest look at who you truly are. It’s a very, very difficult question to answer. You may believe you know, but seldom do you truly know without outside input from family and friends.  Most of us put up this huge wall that we want everyone to see, but not see behind it. This is a very discreet area of yourself that you never want to share with anyone else. It’s a very dark and vulnerable part of your personality that holds your fears, lies and doubts. It has many embarrassing or painful events that have happened to you in the past or that you are anticipating based on your past experiences. You are very careful who you let in this part of your life, if you let them in at all.  I had always put up a front on how I wanted others to perceive me, so not to damage my “reputation”.  I had some very painful and deep emotional scars.  I lied about my short comings to always make me look better. I was the one that everyone expected to hold it together.  After all, I was a football player and players overcome conflict, right?
