Inspired by the PGA Tour, the new Cleveland CG1 Gold irons are Cleveland Golf's new flagship blades. Currently played by Vijay Singh, these elegant irons feature a new technology called Micro-Mill. Using this process of computer milling both face and grooves, Cleveland Golf has created an iron that is tuned for optimal trajectory and distance control. When robot tested, shot dispersion was reduced by an astounding 50%, making it an extremely popular iron choice among good golfers everywhere.
CG1 Black Pearl irons also feature a multi-layer, micro-coating that drastically reduces blinding glare while allowing the club to maintain its soft feel, bendability and resistance to rust.
The Cleveland CG1 iron is a muscle back blade that is typically intended for the better ball striking golfer. The form-forged head and minimal offset combine to create a club that, on solidly struck shots, is both butter-soft and incredibly consistent.
The classic shape of the CG1 Black Pearl irons features a longer blade length, straighter topline and a more squared toe. With an optimized center of gravity, they also allow greater trajectory control for skilled players.
Nothing will ever compare to the feeling you get when you make perfect contact with a blade. The shot feels solid; you get great feedback and the ball sails long and far.
You can do anything you want with the ball… draw, fade, high, low and somewhere in between. That’s the beauty of a blade. Obviously the forgiveness is minimal but if you’re worried about that… you’re playing the wrong iron. The CG1 combines a classic blade design with a new cutting edge material to create a quality iron.
Cleveland CG2 Gold Iron Set
Fetures: 1. Low density, Carbon Metal Matrix construction provides improved stability at impact and allows for a lower, deeper Center of Gravity (CG) for higher initial launch trajectory. 2. Perimeter-weighting supported by a small cavity back provides improved forgiveness on off-center hits. 3. Spheres within the Carbon Metal Matrix construction dampen vibration at impact. 4. Shafts - Dynamic Gold R300 (Regular flex) & S300 (Stiff flex).
Blades are quickly becoming a thing of the past… companies are finding new ways to make clubs that have blade-like feel and looks while providing the forgiveness of a cavity.
Even the best players in the world are looking for a bit of forgiveness… they can’t be perfect all the time! Cleveland has been a leader in this new market and the CG2 irons are their most recent entry.
The biggest technology in the CG2’s has to be Cleveland’s new CMM metal. CMM metal is one of the softest metals out there and it provides great feel. I won’t get into the in’s and out’s of CMM but basically it’s less dense than traditional steel and it dampens out some of the vibrations created when the golfer hits a ball. The CG2 is a pretty nice looking club and Cleveland has done a nice job combining a blade and a cavity back. The top line and sole are thin, the cavity is there but it’s not huge, the offset is minimal and the finish is appealing.
They are fairly forgiving (in comparison to other “players” irons that is), they hit a low to mid ball, they are nice to look at and the shaft options are solid. Everything was “ok” with them and they might rank in the top ten or fifteen best “players” irons of 2005. Try the CG2 for yourself… if you are a fan of a soft iron… you might have found a winner here!
