Her Campus ( Visit http://www.hercampus.com ) and its team of 1,000+ student experts from across the country offer their essential tips on surviving Spring Break, for parents and students, from safety to logistics. The right hotel is essential – Some destinations are safer than others and that starts with the hotel. Students should opt for hotels accustomed to dealing with families because they maintain an exceptionally high level of security. Hotels that are populated by students tend to turn a blind eye to potential Spring Break dangers. Don’t forget the common sense – Just because a student is on Spring Break doesn’t mean she should go out alone, leave her drink unattended, or go home with someone she just met. Rape whistles and pepper spray should be part of any collegiette’ Trust your student – Your student is going to behave the same way on Spring Break as he or she does during the school year. If a student isn’t much of a party animal, she won’t be a party animal on Spring Break. Reality TV isn’t real life – Those wild, lustful, drunken Spring Breaks of MTV aren’t exactly the real thing, unless you’re talking about Miami, Cancun, Vegas and Cabo. While the goal of many students is to enjoy themselves, most students understand the difference between the Jersey Shore and reality. Moderation is key – If you know you are going to be partying and drinking, then skip the desert and limit the buffet to one plate. If you know you’re going to be spending a day in the sun, don’t skimp on the sunscreen. If you’re going to be driving, don’t drink. Alternative Spring Breaks – Many schools and religious organizations offer alternative spring break options, including networking retreats and community service trips. Students who partake in an outdoor sport will often travel for Spring Break with their respective teams. Travel light and protect the valuables – Is there anything worse than losing your passport on Spring Break? How about an ATM card? Vacationers should travel as light as possible and leave passports, credit cards, valuable jewelry and other valuables in the hotel room safe, and keep a photocopy of their passport on them at all times.
