Feb. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Vehicle Tracking Solutions, (VTS), the leading New York area provider of Fleet Tracking GPS Services, recently donated vehicle tracking systems to non-profit organizations Island Harvest and LI Lighthouse Mission to help them better manage their pick-up and distribution vehicles. This donation allows both organizations to work more efficiently and lower their costs so they can continue to provide the most good to the many communities they serve.

VTS offers real time GPS vehicle tracking for companies with fleets of cars, trucks, vans or buses. Their system integrates detailed, up-to-date maps from Microsoft Bing with real-time traffic information and turn-by-turn directions, thus providing efficient monitoring and improved security as well as enabling more effective decision-making capabilities for their customer companies.

According to John M. Cunningham, Jr., President and CEO of Vehicle Tracking Solutions, “This donation, which we are honored to be able to make, reflects our commitment to giving back to our community and to making Long Island a better place for all who live here. We believe strongly in the wonderful work these two charities are doing and the desperately needed services they provide. The donation of vehicle tracking systems will enable them to continue their efforts in a more efficient and effective manner”.

Benefits to Island Harvest and LI Lighthouse Mission:

Island Harvest is the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island. They deliver millions of pounds of food to a network of 570 Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens, and other non-profit organizations that offer feeding services for those in need. Since their inception in 1992 they have delivered 71 million pounds of food, supplementing close to 54 million meals.

LI Lighthouse Mission is Long Island's largest and only weekly mobile pantry which distributes food & clothing to more than 156,000 food insecure people each year. They go to 10 towns as far west as Wyandanch, east as Riverhead, South as Bellport and North as Port Jefferson Station; covering 765 square miles of Suffolk County. These "street outreaches" are conducted several times every week. Most days two box trucks from their fleet head out to two different locations. Filled with food, they set out faithfully to specific locations on Long Island. They unload and distribute the food to the hungry & homeless in the area. They also conduct a back to school program that distributes school supplies to children in need, and a Thanksgiving food drive and Christmas toy drive to support those in need, as well as a Saturday Kid's program, picking up children from area shelters, and transporting them to an afternoon of fun, activity and a nutritious meal.

“The generous donation of the tracking systems from Vehicle Tracking Solutions allows Island Harvest to limit our spending and direct additional funding towards important food recovery and distribution programs, getting food to those who need it quicker and more efficiently,” said Migdalia Otero, Vice President of Operations, Island Harvest. “Vehicle Tracking Solutions is a prime example of local companies joining with Island Harvest in finding creative solutions in addressing the critical issue of hunger on Long Island.”

Pastor Jim of LI Lighthouse Mission added, “The people at VTS have been great supporters of ours for a long time, and this donation was truly a blessing in so many ways. Now, because we are able to direct and track our vehicles more effectively, we have been able to streamline our routes and use less fuel in the process, making us both more efficient and a little bit ‘greener’. There were so many hidden benefits to their donation, it has truly been a tremendous blessing to us and to the continuation of our work”.

VTS’ Silent Passenger Technology:

A GPS tracking system like Silent Passenger by VTS enables companies to run their businesses as efficiently as possible, reducing operating costs while increasing the number of service calls/deliveries completed each day. Customers who have used this system have experienced such benefits as: lower fuel costs, reduced overtime pay, boosted profits, increased employee productivity, efficient dispatching, improved customer service and eliminated personal use of vehicles.

This recently introduced cutting edge web-based application integrates detailed, current maps from Microsoft Bing with up-to-date traffic information and turn-by-turn driving directions.  Because it is web-based, it has always been available on any computer, anywhere. But with the introduction of Pocket Passenger for the Android and iPhones, this indispensible information is available via smart phones as well.

Once the app is downloaded, the “current status” of the entire fleet of vehicles is displayed. Touch screen technology enables the operator to zoom in and zoom back out in both map view and satellite view, as well as run a status report on an individual vehicle. The setting tab feature allows operations management to track a subgroup of vehicles as well.

The landmarks tool creates a set of driving directions by accessing a database of landmarks -- customer locations, employee addresses and any other frequently visited addresses. Directions can be easily accessed and will appear for the most efficient route, utilizing up to the minute traffic and routing information.

Historic reports are available containing such information as: stops, route, speed, odometer, mileage, engine idling and start/end of day. Text alerts can be sent to a smart phone indicating when drivers start their day, exceed speed limits, enter unauthorized areas, or use the vehicle during off hours. Vehicle maintenance alerts and speed alerts can also be accessed. And the vehicle maintenance program in Silent Passenger allows the monitoring of oil changes, inspections and other routine maintenance. Additionally, the industry’s first and only true speed notification system is also available in Silent Passenger.

The availability of this information in app form is testament to the advanced technological capabilities of VTS, the largest GPS tracking provider in the New York metro area, tracking more than 16,500 assets for over 1,100 clients.
