Feb. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Devon Prep’s Student Council kicked off “Catholic Schools Week” 2011, by sponsoring the First Annual Student vs. Faculty Academic Challenge in the school's gym.  The student team was comprised of juniors and seniors who currently participate on Devon Prep’s Academic Challenge Team. The faculty team included math, science, and language teachers who volunteered to participate in this event.

The competition followed the format of the Chester County Intermediate Unit’s High School Academic Challenge Competition with both teams trying to answer as many questions correctly as possible, therefore earning the most points. With the entire student body watching the faculty team got off to a slow start, trailing the students briefly in the first round.  However, they quickly recovered and never looked back, winning the competition 195 – 115 after three rounds of play.

Student Council President Albert Emhof provided the questions and History Teacher Mr. Paul Sanborn served as the host. The Chester County Intermediate Unit provided the score board and buzzers.

According to Emhof, “The Student Council came up with this idea as a fun activity that would evoke some friendly competition between the students and faculty. We’re hoping it continues as an annual event.”

In case you’re curious, here are some of the questions asked during the Challenge:

1. When this gland in the human body becomes enlarged, it is known as a goiter. It also produces T3 and T4 and is located in the neck.

2. This Italian city was ruled by the Medici family and was a center of the Renaissance.

3. This man presided over both Marbury v. Madison and Gibbons v. Ogden as the longest serving Chief Justice.

And the answers are: 1.Thyroid gland, 2 .Florence, 3. John Marshall

Among the other Catholic Schools Week events planned by the Student Council were: a home cooked breakfast for faculty and staff; a free “Devon Prep” dress down day; and a pep rally to support the varsity basketball team.
