Gitmo Author Discusses the Future of Guantanamo

March 10, 2011 - PRLog -- LONG Island, N.Y. – Author Montgomery J. Granger of Long Island, N.Y., who was assigned as a medical service officer responsible for the care and treatment of detainees in both Iraq and in Guantanamo Bay, believes the time has come for Gitmo trials to take place, and for it to remain a detention facility.

Granger is a three-time mobilized U.S. Army Reserve Major (Ret.) who wrote the book Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay: A Memoir of a Citizen Warrior about his time at Gitmo.

President Obama has just signed an executive order creating a formal system to indefinitely detain prisoners without trial at the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In addition, the White House said it will resume new military commission trials at the base. The announcements mark the latest sign that the military prison will not be closed.

Lawrence Korb, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, stated, “Basically it means that Guantanamo Bay is going to be open for as far as we can see, because if in fact you can transfer the prisoners, you do try them, then you’ll have to put them some place if you convict them.”

Granger said the Geneva Conventions and Law of Land Warfare do not require prosecution of detainees, as they may simply be held “until the end of hostilities.” They are not entitled to habeas corpus, and now, after Obama's announcement, if any of the unlawful combatant detainees are also facing war crimes, military commissions may be used.”

He added, “The precedent has always been on the side of suspending habeas and establishing military commissions for the enemy during war time, and it’s about time that it was re-established now, at a critical time in the Global War on Terror [GWOT]. My book explains in detail why Gitmo is the best place for unlawful combatants in the GWOT.”

Granger believes that in the middle of all this is the reputation of Gitmo as a legitimate detention facility. “My book helps clear the way for understanding that not only is Gitmo the finest military detention facility in the world, it is not the torture and abuse chamber the liberal media and Obama have previously made it out to be. Now is the time when its legacy can be rewritten to reflect its actual place among America’s finest institutions, although regrettably one of its most controversial. The bottom line is that it is a legitimate, legal and brilliantly run facility.”

Backing his contention, “The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) personnel I served alongside, complimented us on being ‘the best’ at detention operations in the world, bar none.”

At this turning point in diplomatic history, the author will be making several personal appearances at Long Island events. Granger will appear at:

•   Book signing, Power Point presentation and Q&A: 2-5 p.m. March 12, Borders Book Store, Stony Brook, Long Island, N.Y.
•   Book signing, Power Point presentation and Q&A: 7-10 p.m. May 29, Book Revue, Huntington, Long Island, N.Y.
•   Guest speaker for the Town of Southampton Memorial Day event: 11 a.m. May 30, Agawam Park, Southampton, Long Island, New York.

Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay: A Memoir of a Citizen Warrior is Granger’s story of working detention and medical duty with the Joint Task Force 160 U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay from February to June, 2002. Granger found himself the ranking Army Medical Department officer in a joint military operation like no other before it. His job was taking care of alleged terrorists, just months following 9/11.
