March 23, 2011 - PRLog -- In 1983, California was the first state in the union to create a state IAQ program.  The State of California Indoor Air Quality Program is part of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).  The program's statutory mandate is to safeguard the public interest through a coordinated and coherent effort to protect and enhance indoor environmental quality in California residences, public buildings and offices.

As part of the program the department offers hiring guidance for selecting an IAQ consultant.  They state that most of the criteria used in selecting a professional to provide indoor air quality services are similar to those used for other professionals:
•   company experience in solving similar problems, including the training and experience of the individuals who would be responsible for the work
•   quality of interview and proposal
•   company reputation
•   knowledge of local codes and regional climate conditions
•   cost

The hiring guide goes on to report, “An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) survey of firms providing IAQ services found that almost half had been providing IAQ diagnostic or mitigation services in non-industrial settings for ten or less years. Ask how much and what type of IAQ work the firm has done. Have the firm identify the personnel who would be responsible for your case, their specific experience, and related qualifications.”

One of the leading providers of IAQ and other indoor environmental services is Clark Seif Clark.  The company has over 20 years of project experience in all types of buildings.  “A consultant may be effective if they possess a science degree, an industry hygiene certification and the right equipment and tools to complete the job. But, what makes a consulting firm great is its experience and competencies in understanding the ways that hazards interrelate with the specific building environment.” reported Derrick A. Denis, V.P. Indoor Environmental Quality at Clark Seif Clark. “Experience allows investigators to identify IAQ issues, and to economically deliver creative and viable solutions to the client. CSC has helped thousands of people to identify and to resolve IAQ issues across California, Arizona and the rest of the Southwest,” he continued.
