Hughes Design Associates Designs Private Residence on Kiawah Island in Charleston, South Carolina

The exterior of the home – one of the largest on Kiahwah Island – was designed by nationally-recognized and respected architect, Robert A.M. Stern.  

The Kiawah Island residence was designed by Pamela and her design team as a sanctuary for the family to relax and retreat. Finishes were carefully selected to reflect an informal and casual atmosphere. They included soft palettes of color, rich-yet-durable fabrics, distressed woods, informal furniture, and traditional light fixtures appropriate for beachside living. An emphasis was placed on painted and antique finishes, avoiding anything “new-looking” or shiny.

The entire home has a soft patina appropriate to a beach setting. Many of the furnishings, particularly the lighting, were custom-designed, made in the US, and crafted by hand. Art, both new and antique, was thoughtfully selected and is displayed throughout the home to showcase talented local and regional artists and artisans from the South Carolina area.
