Follow on Google News | Can We Save The Great Lakes From Asian Carp And Save Millions Of Tax Dollars In The Process?John Hinde the President of Air Diffusion Systems is a leading expert on improving water quality and protecting natural resources in a sustainable fashion. He has a simple and efficient solution to the Asian Carp problem.
By: Ira L Shapira DDS, D,ABDSM The alewives entered Lake Michigan thru canals in the late 1940's though they normally reside in Atlantic Ocean waters. Like the Asian Carp they were not native species. When the sea lampreys killed off the large predator fish the alewife population exploded in Lake Michigan to frightening proportions that threatened the health of Chicago residents. Those of you old enough to remember will never forget miles of beaches covered with alewives that were hauled away in dump trucks. By July 7, 1967 there are so many alewives around Chicago that it's become national news.even Time magazine is talking about it. The stink and mess of hundreds of millions of dead rotting fish closed beaches and grossed out anyone approaching the lake. Nelson Hinde used out of the box thinking to solve this horrendous problem. Albert Einstein is credited with saying "You cannot solve a problem with the same level of thinking that created it" . John Hinde told me that "My father had a vision and bought and delivered the first 500,000 salmon and trout into Lake Michigan over 4 decades ago with Salmon Unlimited." By 1972 there were newspaper articles about BIG-FISH fishing coming to Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Everyone who enjoys Lake Michigan fishing or eating the trout and salmon owes a debt to Nelson. NOW WE NEED TO COME UP WITH CREATIVE WAYS TO DEAL WITH THE ASIAN CARP AND OTHER SPECIES! An excellent article, "Asian carp called the biggest threat to Great Lakes in years" from the Daily Herald spells out the problem. The Asian Carp has decimated river fishing in the Missippi, Illinois and other rivers and may soon destroy Lake Michigan's fishing, a 7 billion dollar industry.. The Carp also have the potential of destroying Lake Michigans potential for recreational uses. There is a link to the article at the end of this release. According to the Daily Herald "The variety know as “bighead” carp can weigh up to 100 pounds and consume 40 percent of their body weight each day. Their size physically crowds out native fish and makes boat traffic and swimming hazardous. Their diet eliminates the food sources of native species, including those pursued by sport and commercial fishermen, and makes it nearly impossibly for them to survive. Another variety of Asian carp, the silver carp, has become infamous for leaping out of the water as motor boats pass, often hitting people on the boat, as can be seen in numerous YouTube videos." One solution to this problem is to close the Chicago locks to Lkae Michigan. This will have a disasterous fall out economically and will probably only create new problems. Learn more about political and legal ramifications by reading the entire Daily Herald story. John Hinde, who is known for his innovative and ecofriendly solutions to many varied water and environmental problems recently told me "The attached news article about the Asian carp has sparked my interest to promote the obvious solution….. We can put a bounty on them …. Say $1 per fish or $0.10 to $0.50 pound to be brought to weigh-in stations where unemployed and retired people or kids or anyone can get paid to harvest the fish. Yes they will have to purchase an Illinois Fishing License for $15 which is good for our broke state. The State can process them and market them as smoked…caned… It’s simple and effective….and we can STOP THE HEMERAGING of funds to STUDY to CARP!!!!!!!!!!! Here’s the deal… the news article states that we have spent $25 million dollars already and they plan on another $9 million. The State of Illinois is being sued and so are others They want to close the shipping canal and where the city of Chicago will lose millions of dollars…not to mention the 51 communities that will be flooded out! Well….if we start harvesting theses unwanted fish and pay $1 each per dead fish we could have removed 34,000,000 fish! According to the cover photo from the Daily Herald article showing fish flying out of the water ….you can virtually rig a net to your boat …put on your helmet on and start catching the leaping fish by the dozens. This is not rocket science. " There is already a market for the Asian Carp in both Israel and China. John Hinde does consider this the total solution. I would encourage our state leaders to spend a little time with John Hinde. If in doubt , listen to him and then decide. He wants to protect the his father's legacy to the people of Illinois.
