Two ‘Connecting to Collections’ Workshops Coming to Asheville in May

March 23, 2011 - PRLog -- ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The North Carolina Connecting to Collections Project (C2C) will be hosting two workshops at the Western Office of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources in Asheville this May. The project intends to assist staff, board members, and volunteers who are interested in improving the ways in which their collections are managed and preserved.

The National Weather Service is partnering with the Connecting to Collections Project to present the BASIC SKYWARN Severe Weather Spotter program on May 17.  This severe weather training will help participants understand the warning process and how to make decisions for the safety of staff and public. Discussions of building safety in high winds as well as thunderstorm development and severity will be covered. The workshop is free but registration is required. The Connecting to Collections Project will also host a workshop to train participants in the basic care of museum artifact collections. The workshop will be held on May 23. Adrienne Berney, Collections Care Trainer for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources’ C2C project, will lead the session. Participants in the C2C session have a unique opportunity to help improve the ways they care for our state’s cultural past. The North Carolina Connecting to Collections Project is an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant-funded initiative aimed at helping institutions better care for their collections. A variety of partner organizations have made this project possible, including the Federation of N.C. Historical Societies, the N.C. Museums Council, the N.C. Preservation Consortium, the State Historic Records Advisory Board, and the Society of North Carolina Archivists.
