March 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Launched in 2008, the TaylorMade Tour Preferred Irons are a fairly recent addition to the golf iron market. They are stylish, nice looking clubs, aimed mostly at mid to low handicap golfers.
Despite the target group the clubs are mainly aimed at though, they are designed to be irons that are quite easy to hit.
"The first thing you notice about the Tour Preferred iron when you position it behind the ball is the classically thin topline, and that it's shorter from heel to toe than the average iron you see today," said Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade manager of iron creation. "What you don't see at address are the sole design and features in the cavity that help drive the performance of this club."
The tour-configured sole was shaped with the help of in-depth feedback from TaylorMade Tour Staff professionals, and features a softened leading and trailing edge that work together to minimize resistance and discourage digging. That helps the sole to power smoothly through the turf to promote purer ball-striking.
A thin topline and shorter head from heel to toe help to create a classic look . The shallow cavity helps distribute weight to the perimeter of the head to increase the moment of inertia (MOI) for extra forgiveness. The sole has softer edges to discourage digging.
These TaylorMade Tour Preferred (TP) irons sit at the opposite end of the scale to the TaylorMade Burner Plus. The flight is far more penetrating and what you loose in forgiveness you make up for in feedback and looks. We found we could shape approach shots with these irons with relative ease.
The Tour Preferred irons feel very solid at impact. The club would sound and feel almost like hitting a forged iron, which was almost surreal. I knew some cast clubs by other leading manufacturers were closing the gap between forged irons in terms of feel, but the TaylorMade's were a real eye-opener. I was also very impressed how easy it was to hit these irons, even on off-center hits, as I felt the face was very resistant to twisting on mishits and provided a consistent shot to shot distance on all my shots. The trajectory on my shots was more on the neutral side and on the low to mid launch angle.
Overall, the TaylorMade Tour Preferred irons are able to mix both modern technology with classic design to produce high performance irons that have a tour look, with the forgiveness of a cavity back. “Modern Technology meets classic design”, is the tag line used to describe the new TaylorMade Tour Preferred Irons and I’ve had the opportunity to test out the latest offering from TaylorMade to see if the Tour Preferred irons live up to their billing.
