By: Jerry Milani The 13.1 featured approximately 3,500 runners while the 5K attracted about 900 competitors. “It was a good course, I started out fast to see if anyone would follow me and they didn't, so I kept going,” said Daza. “I was confident I could win.” “This was a great training race for the Boston Marathon for me,” said Papaz. “It's the first time I've run the race and I look forward to running it again.” In the 5K race that preceded the 13.1, six runners “Beat the Bear,” winning a pair of Karhu shoes for besting the time of Mark Carbone, 37, of Bellerose, N.Y., who wore a full bear costume, as event sponsor Karhu means “bear” in Finnish. Jonathan Shallow, 29, of Dublin was the men's 5K winner, clocking in at 17:20. Evelyn Abiola, 28, of Staten Island, N.Y., took the women's race in 20:29. They and four others beat Carbone's 20:48 to win the Karhu shoes through the promotion.
