May 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Eugene Delacroix was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school. The expressive burshstroke he use and his study of the optical effects of colour profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionists, while his passion for the exotic inspired the artists of the Symbolist movement. A fine lithographer, Delacroix illustrated various works of William Shakespeare, the Scottish writer Walter Scott and the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

While comparing with the Neoclassical perfectionism of his chief rival Ingres, Delacroix took for his inspiration the art of Rubens and Venetian Renaissance painters, with an attendant foucs on colour and movement rather than clarity of outline and carefully modeled form. Dramatic and romantic content characterized the central themes of his maturity, and led him not to the classical models of Greek and Roman art, but to travel in North Africa, in search of the exotic. Friend and spiritual heir to Théodore Géricault, Delacroix was also inspired by Lord Byron, with whom he shared a strong identification with the "forces of the sublime", of nature in often violent action.

Delacroix paintings remain supremely popular across France and indeed internationally, with the Romantic art movement still drawing great crowds to exhibitions for the likes of Turner, Constable and Delacroix. This French artist is unquestionably a key figure in art of this time. It is certainly worth taking the time to look beyond the figures of impressionism like Monet towards those mentioned here whose achievements helped to open the way for all those who followed them.

Some famous Delacroix paintings:

Liberty leading the People

The Barque of Dante

Death of Sardanapalus

Entry of the Crusaders in Constantinople

The Massacre at Chios

Orphan Girl at the Cemetery

Ovid among the Scythians

The Women of Algiers

If you like Delacroix paintings, you can get some museum quality art reproductions from art stores or online art galleries. That would be a good alternative.

Delacroix famous quotes:

A taste for simplicity cannot endure for long.

Do all the work you can; that is the whole philosophy of the good way of life.

Do not be troubled for a language, cultivate your soul and she will show herself.

If one considered life as a simple loan, one would perhaps be less exacting. We possess actually nothing; everything goes through us.

What moves those of genius, what inspires their work is not new ideas, but their obsession with the idea that what has already been said is still not enough.

Talent does whatever it wants to do. Genius does only what it can.

The artist who aims at perfection in everything achieves it in nothing.

Nature is a dictionary; one draws words from it.
