New Free App Brings Cultural Resources to Android Phone Market

The N.C. Department of Cultural Resources announces the NCCulture App, a free beta feature of the Android app. This feature connects users with news and events in arts, history, archives and libraries that are part of the state agency.

May 4, 2011 - PRLog -- RALEIGH , N.C.– The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources today announced the NCCulture App, a free beta feature of the Android app. The feature connects users to find out about news and events in arts, history, archives and libraries that are part of the state agency on their Android phones.

“Currently, there are no other North Carolina state agencies with apps available in the Android Market for the general public,” said Thomas Parrish, Cultural Resources Chief of Information Technology.  “This app is a pilot project for Cultural Resources, and we have other ideas are under consideration,” said Parrish.

“As we use technology to reach new mobile audiences with our history and cultural stories we have had positive feedback,” said Maryanne Friend, Assistant Secretary, Development, Marketing and Communications.  An example is the new twitter.com/CivilianWartime which began in mid March. “One follower wrote that the Civil War tweet ‘has given this 61 year old a reason to find out about Twitter!’ so we know we reach life-long learners with new technology, too,” said Friend.

“Visit the Android Market Place on your phone and search for ‘NCCulture’ to try the free app,” Parrish said.  “We have made the app free because we want to make our news accessible to everyone, and we want to provide as many ways to learn about the creative industry as possible.”

The Department of Cultural Resources has a history of “firsts” as the first North Carolina state agency to podcast and use RSS feeds.  It was also the first state cabinet-level cultural agency in the nation.
