By: AW Media Group Themed around Sir Guru Granth Sahib’s famous quote, “As one has planted, so does one harvest; such is the field of karma,” the 2011 SHOW ME Karma Teen Summit will feature activities and meaningful discussions on topics today’s youth face. From workshops addressing peer pressure to goal setting, participants will not only learn new skills, but also share ideas and receive resources they can take with them to direct a positive future. Tashawnya Menefee, CEO of Show Me the Way Foundation states, “My foundation, Project Karma, Inc., and C.H.O.I.C.E Foundation have one common goal…and that is to guide and empower young people into making better choices for a positive future.” Alesia Alexander Layne, Founder and Executive Director of Project Karma, Inc. continues, “Our work in the community shows us that young people are looking for ways to positively engage each other, and the community. This event will give tools and support for that to happen.” Jimmy Jones, Founder and CEO of the C.H.O.I.C.E. Foundation adds, “Taking part in this event is critical to creating opportunities for our youth to learn key values and become better-rounded and educationally competitive individuals.” SHOW ME Karma will feature a full day of activities geared towards youth ages 10 -18. The one-day event will host a variety of fun, informative workshops, special guest speakers, performances, and a resource fair that is teen-centered to educate young people on healthy relationships, life skills building, financial planning, bullying, artistic expression and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to have a formal group discussion with the SHOW ME Karma Power Panel; a diverse group of special guests who’ve made major accomplishments in various industries including entertainment, politics, and entrepreneurship. 2011 SHOW ME Karma Teen Summit workshops include: • Pretty Girlz Rock: A girls only session featuring activities and meaningful discussions with special emphasis on peer pressure, healthy relationships, various forms of abuse, pro-social communication and assertiveness skills • Holla Back Boyz: A boys only session featuring activities and meaningful discussions highlighting the impact of peer pressure, healthy relationships, rising above the odds, and goal setting. • Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls: An age appropriate session discussing sex education • Style Sessions: Fashion and style-oriented session where teens will be given a fashion boot camp with emphasizes on the importance of interview appropriate attire and etiquette basics for social interaction and dining. • Money Matters: Teen’s will take on a money crash course with CNN’s Clyde Anderson. This session will include planning for college and the importance of credit-worthiness. Financial goal setting, vision boarding, college planning and sound decision making are highlighted. • Grief and Gangs 101: Facilitated by a nationally known grief expert and author on child/teen grief, this session will explore the impact of loss on functioning and tackle the myths of gangs and how to make better choices about peer groups and the gang situation in the metro area • Show Me Body: Facilitated by the area’s top fitness expert, participants will learn about east and healthy ways to jumpstart or kick up their fitness routines beyond P.E. • Karma Art Studio: Art is a healthy alternative to negative habits and activities. The Karma Art Studio is an interactive visual and performing arts workshop designed to teach new cool ART techniques and introduce various media in a fun, interactive environment Registration is now open.
