LeVelle Moton Trades in Sneakers for Dancing Shoes at "Dance Like No One's Watching" Gala

Local gala reaches out to the disabled and terminally ill teens and adults

May 11, 2011 - PRLog -- Raleigh, North Carolina – Just in time for the prom season, local organization will introduce “Dance Like No One’s Watching”, a gala designed to cater to disabled and terminally ill teens and adults, ages 14 and up.  The event will be held on Friday, May 27, 2011 from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the North Raleigh Hilton (Midtown) 3415 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, North Carolina 27609.

North Carolina Central University’s Men’s Head Basketball Coach, LeVelle Moton is no stranger to the Raleigh-Durham community and when the opportunity presented itself to lend a helping hand he did just that.  “I wanted to create community awareness about ‘Dance Like No One’s Watching’, as well as a realization to all others that no matter how difficult or trying things become, you are abundantly blessed at your current stage,” says Moton.   Moton, along with the North Carolina Central University’s Men’s Basketball team, will serve as “prom dates” for a few of the lucky young ladies.

Dance Like No One’s Watching came about as visionary and organizer Naomi Sjostedt-Smith who suffers from Cushing’s disease, had an “ah ha” moment while witnessing a wheelchair bound high school teen girl in tears about not being able to find a dress that would be suitable for her prom.  The Durham native then posted an ad looking for prom dresses, which lead to an overwhelming community outpour of volunteers and donations, including the ballroom at North Raleigh Hilton, evening gowns, accessories, along with volunteers providing hair and makeup services, photography, and much more, allowing a memorable occasion to all event goers.

This event will create an atmosphere of firsts, including for Moton who shared that he did not attend his High School Prom because he could not get a date.

The Gala is free and open to the public.  For additional information or to make a donation, please contact Swan Davis at (910) 644-6059 or Shannon Sharpe at (919) 432-4682.
