Despite recent funding cuts, the employer-led strategic body has pledged to continue its commitment to raising the skills, aspirations and productivity of the Torbay and South Devon workforce, to support the growth of a vibrant and successful local economy. As part of its drive to increase the level of involvement from local employers, the Board have introduced a new meeting format whereby at each meeting a different employer will be invited to showcase their approach to skills development and to share best practice with other businesses. Following their recent success in a number of national and regional awards, Gary Brenton, Personnel and Development Manager at TLH Leisure Resort, was invited to host the first meeting and share TLH’s approach with the ESB. Gary Brenton commented “The Torbay and South Devon Employment and Skills Board has done some very good work and developed many initiatives since its formation. It is vitally important that this good work continues and more local employers become involved in the ESB.” “At TLH we are very proud of how we develop the people within our business and were delighted to host the first meeting and showcase our training approach.” “During the past 12 months we’ve been recognised for our ongoing commitment to staff development which has included being named as the 2010 winner of the Regional and UK National Training Awards and in March 2011 we won the ‘Large Employer of the Year’ and ‘Overall Winner’ titles in the South Devon Skills Awards.” “These recent accolades are the result of almost 20 years’ commitment to investing in the development of our staff both for the benefit of our customers and the business as a whole. Our performance during these tough economic times is a testament to the skills and development of our team.” Gareth Brocklehurst, Chairman of the ESB and Managing Director of Gap Recruitment, said: “The Torbay Development Agency is committed to driving forward partnerships that help the private and public sector raise skills and improve the employment prospects for local people. With this valuable support from TLH the Employment and Skills Board will be able to continue its work to support the local economy.” The Torbay and South Devon Employment and Skills Board will next meet in September.
