New York, NY - Richard P. Brown, MD and Patricia Gerbarg, MD will present a workshop Friday, June 10, 2011 entitled "Breath~Body~Mind: Empowering the Healer and Client,” in collaboration with The Sexual Assault & Mental Health Project, a program of the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NYSCASA) at Beltrone Living Center in Albany, New York.  The event is open to the public.

The workshop begins with a review of the scientific basis for the therapeutic effects of mind-body practices in PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Participants will then be taught a set of basic movement and breathing techniques for rapid relief of stress and symptoms of PTSD. Health care providers can learn how to use these practices for self-care as well as for their patients.  The breathing techniques have been shown to relieve anxiety, depression, and other effects of trauma. How to integrate these techniques into clinical practice to enhance recovery will be discussed.

The Breath~Body~Mind teachings developed by Drs. Brown and Gerbarg are a unique fusion of ancient and modern mind-body approaches derived from Qi Gong, yoga, Christian monks, Coherent Breathing, Open Focus Meditation, and martial arts. The workshop is from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at Beltrone Living Center, Six Winners Circle, Albany, NY 12205.   The $50 course includes a light breakfast and lunch. The course is approved for 5.75 block hours of accreditation in New York State by CASAC, CPP, CPS, and the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse. Registration is at the mhanys.org web site. Call Lorraine McMullin at (518)434-0439 x. 211 or  Chrys Ballerano at (518)482-4222 x. 308 for more information.
