May 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Since the first boarding school opened their doors, they have been the source for higher level learning.  With millions of students heading off to boarding school each year, you have to wonder what goes into their decision making process. There are certainly preconceived notions, but we provide3 things you might not know about boarding schools.

1.   Boarding schools choose their own curriculum. In order to provide the most uniquely designed academic programs, every boarding chooses their own curriculum. For each state in which a particular boarding school is located, there are curriculum requirements and 99% of boarding schools exceed those requirements. Not only is the curriculum specific to each school, but the variety of different academics offered is invaluable. A boarding school may also choose to be more traditional or progressive. With a traditional boarding school, test based curricula and the International Baccalaureate program are two common advancements that determine what style learning your child will be more responsive to. In progressive boarding schools, the approach is more student-centered, rather than the traditional teacher-centered approach. Either way, your child will be receiving superior education tailored to their specific needs.

2.   Athletics are a part of the program, not an add-on. One of the most rewarding experiences while in school is the chance to participate in sports. At a boarding school, sports are not considered an additional feature- it is a central part of the whole program. The quality of athletic programs and facilities varies from school to school, but every boarding school requires their students to participate in at least one sport. This not only encourages your child to be active, but it also gives them the opportunity to try their hand at a variety of different sports and see if one clicks.

3.   Financial assistance is available. The financial requirements at boarding schools vary, but there are financial assistance opportunities available at each institution. Boarding schools have financial aid programs that allow children from every financial bachground a chance for higher education.  Gone are the days that only rich kids could go to boarding school, now with a little help anyone can benefit from a boarding school education.
