By: BikeTexas Every type of cyclist is welcome, and there will be a little something for everyone, including BikeTexas’ Kids Kup children’s bike race, trick contests for fixed gear and BMX bikes, games, prizes and commemorative t-shirts. Bike Month is a nation-wide phenomenon, traditionally held in the spring, to celebrate bikes and encourage more people to ride. The month of May was Austin’s Bike Month, with cycling-related events happening all over the city all month long, including a proclamation from the City Council and a bike-in book swap at the Twin Oaks branch of the public library. The largest event was Bike To Work Day, held on Friday, May 20. Bike shops, cafes, libraries and other bike-friendly businesses all over the city hosted breakfast stations and after-work “happy hour” stations to provide refreshments to those who commuted to work by bike that day. The Bike Month Closing Celebration t-shirt sales will benefit local nonprofits the Yellow Bike Project, the League of Bicycling Voters, the Austin Cycling Association, Please Be Kind to Cyclists and BikeTexas. Bicycle safety education curriculum, teacher training, and direct advocacy efforts at the local and state levels are our biggest activities. End
