Houston's First Surgery Center Dedicated To Dentistry Now Treating Patients Under General Anesthesia

June 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Jaimee, a young mother, recently took her son, Eric, to their dentist and learned that he had significant dental problems requiring extensive treatment.  Fortunately, now that a new surgical center has opened in Houston, Jaimee’s son did not need to endure the months-long wait to receive care in a hospital that others in his situation regularly face.  Once his dental needs were discovered, Eric was seen and treated within days.

Houston Children’s Dental Center, the Houston area’s first Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) focused exclusively on dentistry, began treating patients in April.  As a Texas state-licensed ASC, Houston Children’s Dental Center is not a traditional dental office.  With full operating rooms and an experienced staff of nurses, anesthesiologists, and dentists, the organization hosts dental procedures in a setting much like that of an outpatient hospital.

Many local dentists have already expressed optimism that Houston Children’s Dental Center will provide better access to dental care for their patients who need treatment under general anesthesia or cannot be treated easily in regular dental offices.  Patients who may benefit by receiving treatment at the new surgery center include young children, dental phobic individuals, and patients with special health care needs.  Until now, when referred out by their dentists, such patients have often waited long periods – sometimes months – before they could receive treatment.  “We are excited we can refer our patients to a dental surgery center where they can be seen soon and treated safely under general anesthesia,” said Joann Lopez, Office Manager at Little York Dental.

Dr. Elizabeth Carrillo, a dentist at A&E Dental, said, “Until now, we’ve often had to refer to hospitals with long wait times.”  She continued, “Referring to Houston Children’s Dental Center is easy.  And, because referrals do not receive ongoing care there, I know all my patients will come back to me for their regular checkups.”

Brian Walker, Administrator of Houston Children’s Dental Center, explained the need for his organization by saying, “Many people do not have access to the quality dental care they deserve.  We aim to host safe and effective dental procedures for as many people in our community as possible.  And that’s why we accept most insurances, welcome Medicaid, and have a staff that speaks many languages.”

Jaimee reported being pleased with the speed and quality of care her son received.  “Eric was cared for very well,” she said.  “I felt comfortable knowing that [he] was watched over by not only a dentist but also a doctor and a team of nurses.  So I recommend Houston Children’s Dental Center to people who want safe, fast dental work.”
