Follow on Google News | Sara Davis Buechner June 14 Concert at Aloha International Piano FestivalBuechner offers a "virtuoso workout" featuring works by Haydn and Von Weber at her Aloha International Piano Festival concert
In a message sent from the Osaka Kansai airport earlier this month, Sara Davis Buechner wrote: "My Aloha International Piano Festival recital on June 14 should be a lot of fun (hopefully!) and a challenge for myself as well. On the first half, I've paired two very experimental works for their time – the dramatic transition time of Classical to Romantic music in the period of 1790 - 1810. I'll be playing two Sonatas, the last Sonata of old Franz Haydn and the first Sonata of young Carl Maria von Weber. Both pieces give the pianist a hefty virtuoso workout, and the ending of that Weber Sonata is, well, if I may be so bold, just spectacular. The last movement is a Perpetuum Mobile rondo in which the audience gets to wonder if the pianist's right hand is going to fall off. Clearly this is what Weber intended, and I can imagine his wry smile as he put all those fast notes to paper." "The second half is a tribute to Spanish dance, which is one of my great loves," continued Buechner. "I'll be playing the complete (ten) Gypsy Dances of Joaquin Turina, the great Spanish composer of the Twentieth Century. These short pieces have everything – song, dance, joy, sorrow, intrigue, abandon, smoldering sexuality even! Very attractive, colorful and melodious music. To end the evening with a proper dessert, I'll play three Gershwin songs in 1920s foxtrot style, arranged by myself. Somehow I've come to think of a recital as not properly ending if it doesn't include some Gershwin. And then a martini, hopefully."
