June 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Rats. Ipswich plague from floods. The recent floods in Brisbane and Ipswich in  South East Queensland have caused rat numbers to explode. The danger of disease increases in direct proportion to rat numbers. Rats need easy and regular access to water and food. Homes supply shelter, water and food.

Floods have moved rats up to higher ground and building new nesting areas, increasing plague numbers.

Local pest controllers are unable to keep up to the demand and residents are relying on Brisbane companies to come to their aid.

The importance of controlling a plague is critical, councils have departments that attempt  to control the towns and cities but a plague needs occupants of buildings to commence rat controll as soon as possible.

Ongoing rat control is essential in the control of diseases currently present  in Australia. Diseases such as Murine Typhus fever (endemic), Weills disease  (infectious jaundice), Rat bite fever or relapse fever,Trichinosis (worms become encysted in muscles of humans, Lymphoctic choriomeningtis ( takes the form of mild meningitis), Mouse Tyhoid or duck egg disease, Poliomyelitis (two types of polio virus), Favus (ring worm) .

History records many plagues in Europe hundreds of years ago till the recent present. There are two main types of rat that spread disease throughout the world (rattus rattus) the Roof Rat and (rattus norveigius) The Norway Rat.

The Norway rat usually lives near water in burrows in creek banks , under houses, in the garden, long grass, piles of stored debris and house  voids. A very large rat that is dominant expelling the smaller Roof rat if sharing an area.

A Roof rat is more mobile and is found nesting in walls and roof voids , One of the favoured foods is dog biscuits and  packaging is easily gnawed through. Also uneaten bowls of pet food left out and laundries used to feed pets and  to stored their  food provide easy access.  Kitchen cupboards are taken over by rats too if not carefully monitored.
