June 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Bel Canto Chorus will continue its tradition of taking the art of choral music abroad. On tour from July 16-25, 2011, Bel Canto will perform four concerts in four South American cities under the direction of Maestro Richard Hynson. Alongside the Milwaukee-based chorus will be members of the Texas Choral Consort of Austin, TX. Ninety-two total participants will travel with the group.

The combined choruses will perform Gabriel Fauré's Requiem with Orquesta Filarmónica de Montevideo on July 19 at Teatro Solis in Montevideo, Uruguay. The concert will be repeated on July 20 in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, where the group will perform with the Coro Municipal de Colonia and its director, Fernando Maddalena Balbi. Mozart's Requiem will be performed on July 22 at the Cathedral de Mercedes in Mercedes, Argentina, with another performance on July 23 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The program includes a selection of American folk songs and spirituals performed a cappella.

Formed in 1931, Bel Canto Chorus is Southeastern Wisconsin's longest continuously performing arts group. The chorus opened its 80th anniversary season this past October to a sold-out house and rave reviews of its "dynamic, polished performance" (Elaine Schmidt, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).

In addition to its season performances, Bel Canto is committed to serving choral music through outreach to, education of, and collaboration with students, educators, and other performing arts groups in the community, as well as through the advocacy of new music and emerging artists.

Bel Canto Chorus will open its 81st season on Sunday, September 11, 2011, with a free commemorative concert event in honor of the victims and first responders of September 11, 2001.  United We Stand will take place at 3:00 PM in downtown Milwaukee's Cathedral Square Park.
