July 12, 2011 - PRLog -- Too much salt intake, whether it is good or bad has been in a debate for some time now. There were articles stating that too much of it indeed has negative effects to health. However, there are also studies defending the opposite.

But whether high sodium is posing threats to health or not, GreenBeanBuddy.com believes that more than enough of anything is already too much. And so, it shares the possible dangers that too much daily salt intake can bring.

Based on the latest US research, the more salt is taken in the higher is the death rate. And although  high sodium is just often linked to hypertension and heart attack, it can actually increase death rates from all possible causes.

An article written last year in New England Journal of Medicine had even stated that a great number of Americans could be saved yearly if only they will decrease their daily sodium consumption. The figure the article gave is 44 000 annually.

“Salt is one of the basic ingredients that give foods taste. It is also an effective and green home cleaning product. But cleaning aside, do you know that too much intake of salt can have serious negative effects to health?”

“Well, according to one study, too much daily consumption of sodium indeed is bad for health. An article in New England Journal of Medicine last year even stated that 44 000 Americans    could be saved every year if only they decrease their salt consumption by three grams a day.”

“However, there are also other studies countering that there is no evidence to suggest that salt can really do health any good or harm. Some articles even argue the statement that too much salt is bad. And so the debate goes whether high sodium indeed poses medical threats or not.”

“According to a recent study in the United States though, there is a link between high sodium and high death rates. So to be safe, it would be best to always watch out how much salt you daily take.”

“Just last year, an article in the New England Journal of Medicine estimated (using previous studies' numbers) that the U.S. could prevent 44,000 deaths annually if Americans reduced their salt intake by 3 grams per day.”

“Then, early this month, a review of seven real-life interventions to reduce salt consumption found nothing of the sort. The review, from the Cochrane Collaboration, found only ambiguity, with no evidence to suggest that salt reduction did the trial participants any good or any harm.”

"It's Time to End the War on Salt," a headline in Scientific American proclaimed last week. "For every study that suggests that salt is unhealthy, another does not," the article said. As if to prove that point, a new paper this week in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine now argues, again, that too much salt is bad.”

“The latest study used national U.S. survey data linked to mortality files to show that the more salt people ate, the higher their death rates from all causes combined. The study looked further at salt intake in relation to potassium intake, and found that the lower people's potassium and the higher their sodium, the more likely they were to develop heart disease or die of a heart-related cause.”
