Planned Oil and Gas Pipelines - Global Market Analysis, Competitive Landscape and Major Projects

Asia-Pacific to Add Two-Fifths to the Global Planned Pipeline Length

July 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Asia-Pacific will be the major contributor to planned pipeline length addition for 2011–2015, globally. The region will be responsible for 41.8% of the total global planned pipeline length addition during this period. India and China will be the frontrunners in this addition. Huge energy demand and the expansion of refining capacities are the primary reasons for pipeline developments in these countries.

During 2011–2015, gas pipelines will account for about 75% of the total global planned pipeline length
addition. Increases in oil and gas production will lead to more planned pipeline projects. Global natural
gas production is expected to increase at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 2.7% during 2011–
2015, while global oil production is expected to increase at an AAGR of 1% during the same period (BP
Energy Outlook 2030). Due to a higher rate of gas production, more gas pipelines are planned than oil
pipelines.

The global pipeline industry is a widespread industry and the planned pipelines are not concentrated in
any particular region. The top five countries in the planned pipeline industry account for about 50% of the total planned pipeline length addition. These countries are Russia, India, the US, China, and Canada.

Of these countries, Russia plans to develop pipeline infrastructure to target the Asian markets (such as
Korea and China) for oil and gas exports. China plans to add pipelines to secure its oil and gas supplies
from source countries, such as Myanmar and Russia. India plans to develop pipelines for the internal
transportation of gas and petroleum products. Both the US and Canada, due to their large geographical
areas, have planned pipelines to transport gas and petroleum products, from resource rich, to resource
deficient regions

During 2011–2015, most of the global pipeline length addition will be associated with state owned companies. There are a large number of private companies involved in pipeline projects, but these
companies are only involved with a limited number of projects. Out of the top 10 companies by associated pipeline length, only two companies are privately owned. The state-ownership of the pipelines shows the importance of the pipeline projects for governments across the world. During 2011–2015, state owned companies will have a 54.7% share in the total planned pipeline length additions.
