(Detroit, MI, August 1, 2011) “CornerStore” is a new comedy, recently filmed in Detroit by Joe Doughrity. It chronicles one eventful summer day at a convenience store on Detroit’s Six Mile Road. Owned by the Jenkins family, the store is operated by Earl, a handsome, middle class, full-time father of 2 young adults--his son Gerard, an aspiring chef, and daughter Gail, a fun-loving yet sneaky twenty-something. The eccentric customers are the real stars of this PG-13 (pending) rated comedy. From winos to gangsters, thieves to neighborhood kids, a LOT can happen on the corner.  The film features Roger Guenveur Smith ("American Gangster", "Deep Cover" & "Do the Right Thing"); Judge Mathis (native Detroiter, TV star); Trick Trick (rapper, member of Puremichigan.org campaign); Dwele (R&B star, native Detroiter) and has a special guest appearance by Tommy Hearns (boxing champion, native Detroiter). Interview opportunities are available and welcomed for both cast and crew. We can provide high resolution photos and the trailer as needed for media use.  We will be hosting panel discussions with the cast and crew after the screenings on topics ranging from “how to break into the film business to How to create a feature film under $100, 000. Potential Story Angles:

Potential story topics categories: Business: 1,10,11 |Inspirational: 1,3-5| Controversial: 6, 10| Detroit: 1-10.

1.      Perhaps you have heard this one before….young black male enters a liquor store and leaves quickly…..it’s not what you think….he ends up making a fun-lighthearted feature movie about said store. Joe D. is giving back to Detroit by putting on panel discussions to help others break into the industry on both sides of the camera.  Here are some sample topics:
                         I.             How to create a strong short film or full length feature on a tight budget
II.             How to break into acting if you don’t live in NY or LA
III.             How to get a job/experience on a film project
IV.             Non-traditional careers that you should consider!
2.      Detroit, aka Motown is known for its music: Detroit music permeates the soundtrack. Clark Sisters and Parliament ("Atomic Dog", "Knee Deep", "One Nation under a Groove".) etc.
3.      Goal-setting: Achieving a goal: Local filmmaker and Cass Tech Alum, Joe D. returns home with 20 years of experience; and makes his dream come true by creating a movie about Detroit, in Detroit. Hometown Boy does good….movie? CornerStore is Shotown Picture’s love letter to Detroit.
4.      “Can-do” spirit: One of the few full-length feature films made in Detroit by real native Detroiters. Joe Doughrity, Dwight Patillo and Robert Evangelista of Shotown Pictures didn’t use incentives, but did use grass roots and passion; they boot-strapped to build a crew and cast and created this relatable film on a low budget.
5.      Business: Shotown Pictures is a film, production and new media company that prides itself on making movies in Detroit, with stories that Detroiters care about.  Shotown is based in Detroit and they are not going anywhere.
6.      Controversy: one of the local Black party store owners, Damon Pondexter, (who is open to an interview) says that there are only 4 Black owned stores out of 400.  Perhaps the angle that Detroit has such a large Black population, but Blacks own hardly any of the corner stores, why is this?  Immigrants coming into a community, making money in the community and taking it out of the community.
7.      Multicultural cast of characters along with some well known names and faces: Roger Guenveur Smith ("American Gangster", "Deep Cover" & "Do the Right Thing"); Judge Mathis (native Detroiter, TV star); Trick Trick (rapper, part of the Puremichigan.org campaign); Dwele (R&B star, native Detroiter) and special guest appearance by Tommy Hearns (boxing champion, native Detroiter).
8.      Detroit represents Detroit: Cast and crew are virtually all from Detroit/Michigan, so we provided jobs, experience and other opportunities.
9.      Detroit sponsors Better Made and Little Caesars: an article can discuss the business aspect of their partnership, getting sponsors and movie product placement.
10.  Summertime in Detroit: where is the place that virtually all Detroiters visit at least once a week? Why do Detroiters/Michiganders frequent/love their neighborhood corner/party/liquor stores or gas station? Perhaps you can discuss the psychology around it.
                         I.            There is the community aspect (it becomes the center of some communities- a place to run into friends and neighbors; almost a church to some- the cornerstone of the community
II.            With the lack of major grocery stores in Detroit, the corner store becomes a quick and easy place to pay a bill; grab a soda/snack/lottery ticket/beer/candy/milk/bread or cigarettes, etc.
III.            Corner stores have a visit frequency (customers sometimes visit more than once/day and return day after day) that not many other businesses can achieve.
IV.            It is convenient for communities where kids are too young to drive; adults may not own a vehicle and the elderly prefer a place to which they can easily walk.
