Vanity publishing using Intec CP2020

Aug. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- Vanity publishing is often sneered upon by both established authors and publishing houses. There are two reasons for this: the fact that such projects are usually entirely funded by the author and a lack of independent editorial judgement.
But the fact remains that it’s a very profitable, niche business, according to Jeremy Brayshaw, owner of PrintXpress in Braintree, Essex who says that it has held firm during turbulent financial times.
Eighteen years ago Mr Brayshaw spotted a gap in the market and established PrintXpress from his home. Today, the bulk of his trade still comes from authors chasing self-publication. “I have successfully filled this gap and it’s actually quite lucrative.”
He adds: “I’m a one-man band and work from home. I have low overheads - if I get no work I have no outgoings.
“Printers weren’t interested in this short-run, print on-demand area, preferring instead to concentrate on long-run work, which is being cancelled all over the place at the moment because of the economic downturn.”
Mr Brayshaw initially installed a Xante CL30 in one of the rooms of his house to carry out this work. “But it then broke and it just wasn’t worthwhile repairing,” he says.
“I replaced it with an Intec CP2020 and although I’ve only had it a week I have already printed 80 copies of a 420 page book on it,” he reveals. “It’s someone’s autobiography and includes lots of colour photos. The Intec has produced a full-colour card cover, which is then stapled and bound with tape.
“The machine will be used to produce short-run colour leaflets up to 300 to 400 in total as well,” he adds.
Mr Brayshaw also has a Multilith offset press in his garage for longer run work. “But I’m using that less and less and the Intec more and more these days because small businesses don’t want to commit to large numbers of printed matter,” he concludes.
