Muslims plan to empower children in the Bronx this Ramadan, by giving free school bags and supplies

Aug. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- For Muslims, the holy month of Ramadan is not only about fasting from sunrise to sunset, it’s also about giving. On Saturday, August 20th, local Muslims will be distributing over 350 school bags filled with school supplies to the Bronx community. The event will be held at the MAS-UNY Bronx Muslim Center and is being organized by Muslim American Society Youth (MAS Youth) and Islamic Circle of North America Relief (ICNA Relief). According to the local coordinator, Abdel Wahab Ghani, “Many families in the Bronx are facing much financial difficulties, so this initiative is dedicated to them”. This initiative is part of ICNA Relief’s national Back-2-School Giveaway Project, which is hosting over 40 similar events across the U.S.  These efforts are helping over 15,000 children nationwide, where each child present will receive a school bag filled with supplies such as notebooks, pens, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, rulers, crayons and scissors.

This initiative hopes to cater to the needs of low-income families in the community, regardless of their race, gender or religion. Islam teaches us that “a person is not a true Muslim who fills his stomach while his neighbor is hungry”, so these efforts an essential part of being a good Muslim, and the month of Ramadan is a month when Muslims are encouraged to give more charity. Through the Back-2-School Giveaway, we hope to both help struggling families provide for their children and inspire the American Muslim community to partake in this commendable act.
