“I was displaced and needed to generate revenue quick. With cooking being like second nature, I was put into a situation that forced me to follow my dream of being a restaurateur to provide for my family.” Nureka’s Taste of New Orleans originally started in 2005 in Houston with Chef Nureka catering and delivering home cooked dishes to the local businesses in the Humble area. In 2008 Nureka took home the trophy for her award winning Gumbo after joining the annual cook off sponsored by the Atascoctia High School in Humble. Gumbo is one of the most popular dishes from New Orleans and a crowd favorite at Nureka’s Taste of New Orleans #1. “A gumbo cook off seems appropriate and feels right. It’s a New Orleans staple and its one of my most popular and most requested item. My motivation to have the cook of is my mother/teacher, she wants to challenge me.” The Gumbo cook off is open to the public, tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the gate. Contestants from all over the Houston area and from the city of New Orleans will participate in the cook off and have their best pot of gumbo judged by a panel of judges and there will be first second and third prize winners.
