Vintage Seekers Introduces Bakelite Jewellery

A raft of colourful, whimsical Bakelite designs are available from Vintage Seekers, the online boutique for 20th century design and collectibles.

Aug. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Vintage Seekers’ stack of five red zig-zag Bakelite bangles from the 1940s were designed by Leo Beakeland (1863 -1944), the Belgian-born inventor of Bakelite.

From the 1980s, meanwhile, is a set of two Shultz Bakelite ‘apple juice’ bangles. Ron and Ester Shultz make some of the most iconic and well-crafted Bakelite jewellery in the late 20th century. There’s also a future vintage ‘school days’ Shultz Bakelite brooch, a charming design depicting a ruler, alphabet blocks, pencil, apple, ink bottle and blackboard brooch from the 1990s.

Bakelite jewellery was at its zenith from the late 1920s till the start of WWII, growing in popularity during the Depression era thanks to its cheerful aesthetic and affordability. Bakelite is a thermoset plastic, meaning that once cast or molded and hardened, it will not melt, burn or dissolve.
