Home Overrun with Spiders? Tips for Keeping Arachnids Out of Your Raleigh Home

Spiders can be helpful housekeepers, preying upon other pests like mosquitoes. However, too many spiders can be a problem. Raleigh pest control company Triangle Pest Control offers helpful tips to homeowners for keeping spiders away.

Sept. 2, 2011 - PRLog -- A number of species of spider are common to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill-Cary area.  Some, like the Black Widow and Brown Recluse, are extremely dangerous, with a single bite being potentially fatal to human victims.  Other species like the Carolina Wolf Spider and common House Spider are helpful predators who help control other pests like mosquitoes and house flies.

However, when spiders overrun a home, helpful or not, they can become a real nuisance.

Homeowners can take action to prevent spider infestation in their homes:

1. Clear out the “cobwebs.”  Sanitation is the best preventive measure in curbing spiders in your home.  Clear away spiderwebs by brushing or vacuuming them.

2. Clean up around the house.  Spiders love to hide in debris and clutter.  Cleaning up plant debris, rocks, wood piles, and compost heaps adjacent to your home and removing clutter and boxes in basement and storage areas are both great ways to eliminate hiding places for spiders.

3. Perform simple fixes that keep spiders out.  Inspect window screens and door frames, looking for holes and gaps, and make repairs as necessary.  Also, caulk any cracks in your home’s foundation and fill gaps around pipes.

4. If spiders are still out of control, call a pest control professional.  Although it might be tempting to try store-bought pesticides or “foggers,” these can be highly toxic to kids and pets if used incorrectly.  Likewise, do-it-yourself treatments might only appear to curb a problem while the infestation only grows.

Pest control professionals such as Raleigh’s Triangle Pest Control are seasoned experts when it comes to controlling spiders in homes.

“Our approach is to thoroughly inspect a property to determine the source of the spider infestation,” notes Triangle Pest Control President & CEO Donnie Shelton.  “Then our Raleigh pest control professionals remove any visible spider webbing from around doors and windows.  After that, we apply treatment to the home’s foundation, which keeps spiders from climbing up into the home.

“We continue to monitor the situation, making periodic inspections and applying treatment to control infestation.”
