Mentoring USA Teams Up with The Regulars Comic Creator, Karl Hampe & Rocking Horse Café for Event

Sept. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- New York, NY – Mentoring USA is teaming up with The Regulars Comic Creator, Karl Hampe and the Rocking Horse Café this September to raise awareness and funds for this fantastic program.

The Rocking Horse Café, located in the heart of Chelsea, along with Karl Hampe, Creator of The Regulars Comic, will host a benefit on Monday, September 19th, 2011, from 6:30 – 9:30pm, filled with food, fun and information on the Mentoring USA program.

Founded by former First Lady of the State of New York Matilda Raffa Cuomo, Mentoring USA (www.mentoringusa.org), is a New York City based, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The mission of Mentoring USA's is to create positive and supportive mentor relationships for youth ages 7-21, using a structured site-based model.  This comprehensive mentoring program matches underserved youth with volunteer mentors.  Since its inception, Mentoring USA has provided mentors for more than 5,000 youth, both nationally and internationally.

Karl Hampe, Creator of The Regulars Comic, is a mentor himself. Angel, the now almost high school graduate he has been mentoring for almost a decade is in fact a character in his popular comic. The Regulars is a fun, snarky take on what might happen if a gay, urban attorney burn-out wound up running a coffee bar.  It's an irreverent weekly, web-based look at the silly, sexy, and enraging clash between gay pride and daily prejudice.
Karl’s passion for the organization made him want to take action to let others know about this wonderful program, that not only brings love and warmth into a child’s life, but to the mentor as well.

“Mentoring USA is a fantastic program that has shown me the power of mentoring both on Angel and myself,” says Hampe. “I hope that this benefit will not only raise money for this program, but garner awareness among people interested in becoming Mentors.”
Hampe hopes to make this an annual event.

The fundraiser will feature Mexican specialties from the Rocking Horse Café, drinks and a silent auction, featuring some of Karl’s original artwork from The Regulars Comic and much more.

In attendance, former First Lady of the State of New York, Matilda Raffa Cuomo, Karl Hampe, Creator of The Regulars Comic, Angel, Karl’s “mentoree” and “famous” character from his strip, and many others.
