Mookie Wilson and Bill Buckner Commission Painting of Historic Play of Game Six 1986 World Series

Sept. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- Mookie Wilson and Bill Buckner have commissioned a unique painting of their historic Game Six 1986 World Series play.  “The Play” occurred in the 10th-inning of Game Six of the World Series between the Mets and Red Sox.  

With the Red Sox one strike away from clinching the 1986 World Series in the bottom of the tenth inning of Game Six, Mookie Wilson fouled off pitch after pitch with last second swings.  Finally, he hit a slow grounder to first baseman Bill Buckner, playing well behind the base.  The ball eluded Buckner, allowing Wilson's teammate Knight to score the winning run.  With drama quite different from a game-winning home run, the accumulated excitement of the slowly building rally capped by the tension of Wilson's at-bat made the game one of the most exciting in World Series history.

Mookie Wilson states: “Bill and I wanted to create something that demonstrates the spirit of the World Series and the excitement of that game.  We believe the artist captured that moment in this painting.  Bill and I are forever linked by one swing, so we combined our efforts on this project. “  

Bill Buckner said “We have been signing the same photo for the past 25 years.  It’s a great shot, but we wanted something new and different.  “The Play” has come to define us and this is a beautiful depiction of a historic moment in baseball history.”

This moment in time is captured by renowned Toronto sports artist Rob MacDougall in a classic one-of-a-kind painting.  The original painting has been purchased by the Mets and will be housed in the Mets Hall of Fame and Museum at Citi Field.  The painting will be presented to the Mets on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 prior to the 7:10pm game vs. the Nationals.
