Darius Rucker was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, where his family had lived for many generations, in 1966. The memories of his southern childhood are very fond ones and helped to form his love and appreciate of music.

During his studies at the University of South Carolina, Darius paired up with Mark Bryan to form a duo, covering R.E.M. songs in local venues. In 1989, Jim Sonefeld and Dean Felber joined the duo to form the band Hootie & The Blowfish. The catchy name and even catchier songs propelled the group to stardom, charting the Billboard Hot 100 six times throughout their career. The band released five studio albums and Darius, the lead singer, was often referred to as “Hootie” by the media.

Country Superstar Darius Rucker to Perform in Atlantic City Show

When Darius Rucker first went solo, he ventured into the R&B world, releasing one album in 2002. It wasn’t until 2008 when Darius signed to Capitol Records in Nashville to being his country career. His first solo country hit “Don’t Think I Don’t Know About It” debuted at number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. This song not only landed on the Billboard chart; it became the first top 20 hit for an African American on the country music chart since Charley Pride’s hit in 1988.

In September of 2008, Darius once again claimed famed when he became the first solo African American artist to chart a number one country hit since Pride’s song. 2008 brought another first for Darius: his debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry in July. Darius was criticized for creating country music, for both his rock music background and because he is African American. Despite the controversy of Darius’ venture into the country world, he came out on top.

His second album, Charleston, SC 1966, was released in October of 2010 to superb reviews and great record sales. His current tour will showcase the hits from both albums and will wow audiences across the U.S.
