Meeting of the UOC Research and PhD Scientific Commission

The Research and PhD Scientific Commission of the UOC – Universitat Oberta de Catalunya - will meet on September 5 and 6 in Barcelona.

Sept. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- The Research and PhD Scientific Commission of the UOC – Universitat Oberta de Catalunya - have met on September 5 and 6 in Barcelona. This commission is an independent body that assesses the academic performance of the University, oversees the quality of the PhD program and advises the president on research strategy. All commission members are prestigious university Chairs from different parts of Spain, Europe and the United States.

The aim of the annual meeting was to evaluate research groups and examine the progress of the PhD program of UOC's research institute, the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3).

Members of the Scientific Commission

The members of this body, created in 2002, are appointed by the Chancellor. At present, the distinguished scientists and professors from different disciplines and countries who belong to this committee are:

•   Martin Carnoy (president), Professor of Education and Chair, Social Studies and Educational Practice Committee, Stanford University.
•   Betty Collis, Emeritus Professor, Faculty of Behavioral Sciences, University of Twente (Holland) and consultant for Moonen & Collis Learning Technology Consultants, BV.
•   William Dutton, Director of the Oxford Internet Institute, Professor of Internet Studies and Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford University.
•   Jerry Feldman, Professor of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and member of the Institute of Cognitive and Brain Sciences.
•   Miguel Ángel Lagunas, Professor of Engineering, Higher School of Telecommunications, Technical University of Catalonia and director of the Telecommunications Technological Center of Catalonia (CTTC).
•   Robin Mansell, Dixon Chair Professor of Internet Studies, London School of Economics.
•   Vicente López, Professor of Computer Science in the Technology Department, Pompeu Fabra University, General Manager of the Barcelona Media Innovation Center and director of the Telefónica UPF chair in Multimedia Production.
•   Guido Martinotti, Professor of Sociology at the University of Milan-Bicocca, coordinator of the Laureate Course in «Science of Tourism and Local Community» at the Faculty of Sociology and coordinator and director of the PhD Committee of the QUA_SI Program, (Quality of Life in Information Society).
•   Vicenç Navarro, Professor of Social Policy and Political Science, Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, and Professor of Public Policy at John Hopkins University, Baltimore.
•   Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Regents' Professor at the Organizational Learning and Instructional Technology Program, Faculty of Education, University of New Mexico.
•   Marina Subirats, Professor of Sociology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
•   Rosalind Williams, Dibner Professor of the History of Science and Technology. Program in Science, Technology and Society, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
